A front door that needs a shoulder push to shut, catches on the frame or only locks when you lift the handle is not just annoying. It can leave the lock under strain, reduce security and turn a small adjustment into an urgent lockout. Knowing how to check door alignment gives you a clear idea of whether the problem is a simple seasonal movement or something that needs professional repair.

For homeowners, tenants, landlords and business owners, the key is to spot the warning signs early. Do not force the key, slam the door or keep lifting a stiff handle harder and harder. Those actions can damage the cylinder, multipoint mechanism, hinges or frame.

Why door alignment affects security

Your door, frame, hinges, keeps and locking points must meet in the right place. When the door drops, swells, twists or moves sideways, the bolts and hooks may no longer enter their keeps cleanly. On a UPVC or composite door, this often shows up as a handle that is difficult to lift or a key that will not turn once the door is closed.

A poorly aligned timber door can have similar symptoms, particularly after wet or cold weather. Timber naturally expands and contracts, while hinges can loosen over time. With aluminium, composite and UPVC doors, hinge adjustment, glazing position and worn parts are more common causes.

The trade-off is simple: a door that is only slightly tight on a damp day may need monitoring, while a door that will not lock properly needs attention now. A lock should not have to fight the door frame to do its job.

How to check door alignment at home

Start with the door unlocked and open. Work slowly and avoid making adjustments before you have identified where the problem is happening.

Look at the gaps around the door

Stand inside with the door closed but unlocked. Check the gap between the door and frame at the top, hinge side and lock side. It should look broadly even all the way around. A noticeably narrow gap at the top corner on the lock side can mean the door has dropped. A gap that is tight at the bottom may point to swelling, movement in the frame or an issue with the threshold.

Daylight around the edges, a draught in one particular area, or daylight showing through more on one side than the other can also indicate an alignment issue. Bear in mind that older properties may never have perfectly uniform gaps, so look for a change from how the door normally sits.

Check for rubbing marks and scrape points

Open the door and inspect its edges, the frame and the threshold. Fresh scratches, compressed paint, bare timber, scuffed UPVC or shiny marks on the keep plates show where the door is catching. If the bottom edge drags across the carpet, threshold or floor, it may have dropped on its hinges.

Close the door gently several times. Listen for scraping and note the exact point where resistance begins. Does it catch near the top, bottom or middle? Does it only catch when the handle is lifted? That detail helps distinguish a door-position problem from a lock fault.

Test the hinges without forcing them

With the door partly open, gently hold the handle and lift the door upwards. Any noticeable movement or clicking can suggest loose or worn hinges. On a timber door, look for loose screws, split timber around the hinge and hinge leaves pulling away from the frame.

Do not remove hinge screws from a heavy external door unless you know it is properly supported. External doors are heavy, and a poorly supported door can drop suddenly, damage the frame or cause injury. UPVC and composite door hinges can look straightforward but often need the correct adjustment method and tools.

Test the lock with the door open, then closed

This is one of the most useful checks. With the door open, lift the handle if applicable and turn the key to throw the locking points. They should operate smoothly. Unlock it again before closing the door.

Next, close the door and repeat the test. If the handle and key work easily when open but become stiff when shut, the lock itself may be fine and the door is likely out of alignment with its keeps. If the key is stiff both open and closed, or the key turns without engaging the lock, you may have a cylinder or mechanism issue instead.

Never leave the multipoint bolts thrown while the door is open. They can catch on the frame or be bent if the door is moved.

Use the paper test for compression

Place a strip of paper between the closed door and frame, then pull it out gently. Repeat at several points around the edge. The resistance should feel reasonably consistent. If the paper slides out freely in one area but is trapped tightly in another, the door may not be sitting squarely against its seals.

This test is especially useful when you have draughts, rainwater coming in or a noisy door. It does not diagnose every fault, but it can show that the problem is more than a worn weather seal.

Common signs that your door has dropped

Most alignment faults develop gradually. You may first notice that you have to lift the handle more firmly, then find you need to pull the door towards you while locking it. Left alone, the locking points can wear against their keeps and eventually fail to engage.

For external doors, it is safer to limit DIY work to cleaning dirt from the threshold, clearing debris from keeps and checking for obviously loose accessible screws.

Avoid spraying general oil into a euro cylinder or multipoint lock. The wrong lubricant can attract dirt and make a fault worse. Avoid planing or sanding an external door until you know why it is catching. Removing material may hide a structural movement problem, ruin weather sealing and create a larger gap later in the year.

UPVC doors are particularly easy to misadjust. A small turn on the wrong hinge or compression setting can make the lock side worse, affect the seals or put extra pressure on the mechanism. If your handle is stiff, treat it as an early warning rather than something to power through.
